Greg Berkeley Appointed as a new chairman of the ICC

The new chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) is Greg Barclay. Greg Berkeley appointed as a new ICC Chairman by defeating Imran Khawaja in the ICC chairman election.  The ICC chairman’s seat has been vacant since Shashank Manohar resigned in July this year. Imran Khwaja was the acting chairman. New policies were also drawn up to determine the top person in the highest governing body of world cricket.

The election was held according to that policy. It was already known that two candidates were ahead. One of them is Imran Khwaja who is currently acting chairman. Khwaja is a former president of the Singapore Cricket Association. He has held various important positions in the ICC since 2007. In 2016, Khwaja was elected deputy chairman of the ICC.

The other is Greg Barclay, president of the New Zealand Cricket Board (NZC). He joined the ICC board in 2014 as NZC director. He was later elected as the chairman of NZC in 2016. During Manohar’s tenure at the ICC, Barclays also played an important role.

The idea was that there would be a fierce battle between Khwaja and Barclays. A lot has happened like this. According to the voting rules, the candidate has to get at least two-thirds of the total 18 votes. Even though he lost to Imran Khawaja by 10-6 votes in the first round, he had to go to the polls in the second round. Where the South African vote is also added to the Barclays box. Barclays won the election. He will have to resign from the post of NZC chairman as a result of winning the election. Barclays is now the second independent chairman of the ICC.
