The match will start at 4 pm Bangladesh time at Sharjah Stadium in the United Arab Emirates. In Super Twelve, all the opponents of the Tigers are strong.
Bangladesh started this World Cup with a loss. The Tigers lost to Scotland by 6 runs in their first match in the preliminary round. However, Bangladesh turned around in the next match. Bangladesh won by 27 runs against the host Oman. In the third and final match of the group stage, Bangladesh defeated Papua New Guinea by 98 runs to secure the Super Twelve.
Super Twelve episode is a big challenge for Bangladesh. As a big team, Bangladesh has won by six wickets against West Indies in the first round of the World Cup. However, Bangladesh could not beat any team outside the preliminary round.
Due to weakness in this format, Bangladesh has never been able to do very well in T20 World Cup. In the first edition of the World Cup in 2006, Bangladesh was able to play in the Super Eight. The Tigers did not win a single match in 2009, 2010 and 2012.
Bangladesh won the 2014 event as there were 16 teams. The group was the best with 2 wins in 3 games in the group stage. After that, the Tigers lost all 4 matches by pulling the Super. The picture was similar in 2016. Bangladesh won 2 out of 3 games in the first round. A match was abandoned. Despite being the best in the group, Bangladesh did not get any taste of victory in the Super Ten.
However, Bangladesh can be confident as the opponent in today’s match is Sri Lanka. However, the Sri Lankans have made it to the Super Twelve with great performances in the three matches of the group stage.
In this format, Bangladesh scored the highest team run against Sri Lanka in the Nidahas Trophy. The Tigers reached the target of 214 runs for the loss of 6 wickets thrown by Sri Lanka by scoring 215 runs for 5 wickets. Mushfiqur Rahim played an explosive inning of impeccable 72 off 35 balls. Bangladesh won by an incredible 5 wickets.
Bangladesh also won by 2 wickets against Sri Lanka in the second leg of the double-league tournament. Another team at the event was India. In one match of the tournament, the players of the two teams got involved in a verbal argument at one stage. Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan also threatened not to play the match at one stage in protest of the umpire’s decision.
Eventually, the team management was able to convince Shakib and the current captain Mahmudullah Riyadh ensured the team’s victory and took Bangladesh to the final. But in the end, the Tigers lost to India in the final.
In that match, Bangladesh was able to match their best in the T20 format. The match involved in that dispute is the last fight between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The result will definitely awaken the memory of that match in today’s match. However, many experienced players of the Sri Lankan team did not play the match. But Bangladesh veterans were part of that match.
Bangladesh has played 11 matches against Sri Lanka in T20 format. The Tigers have won four of them. Sri Lanka won seven. Bangladesh had won the last two matches. However, leaving everything behind, Bangladesh wants to start with a goal to play in the final of the event for the first time. For this, Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah Riyadh is expecting a good performance from the youth. Saifuddin, Mahedi Hasan and Naeem Sheikh are the captains hoping to shine.
